Used Extreme Network Includes: Alpine, Summit, and Black Diamond Equipment

Extreme Networks manufactures high performance, secure network equipment that supports converged voice, video, and data. Extreme also provides wired and wireless network infrastructures; and designs, builds, and installs sophisticated Ethernet solutions that meet the toughest challenges in network connectivity and IP-based communications. Extreme has delivered more than 15 million Ethernet ports and has established a presence in more than 50 countries.

Extreme network equipment is designed for deploying Voice-over-IP (VoIP) services in the enterprise environment. While common applications such as file transfer or web access do not need Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms in most environments, popular voice encoding algorithms might need support from QoS mechanisms in some network environments. In enterprise networks where congestion might occur, deploying QoS mechanisms can provide significant improvements to the quality of VoIP service.

Wherever QoS is deployed, the network should be outfitted with equipment supporting a full 8 queues per port, flexible QoS queuing and scheduling algorithms, both minimum and maximum bandwidths for each queue, and flexible ACLs to ensure that the correct QoS marking is applied to each packet and to filter out unauthorized traffic. Networked devices, whether VoIP handset or a traditional computer workstation, should support appropriate marking of IP Precedence and Ethernet Precedence fields. Following these guidelines will help ensure a successful deployment and optimal network performance during periods of stress.

It is also important to select and deploy networking equipment that has ASIC-based implementations of ACLs, VLANs, Ethernet bridging, and IP forwarding. This helps ensure that enabling important features does not reduce network performance, and the latency through the switch or router is minimized. While CPU-based implementations are becoming less common due to their inherent technical problems, some equipment being sold today still places important capabilities inside the main CPU because that equipment does not have ASIC support for these features.

All of this increased value is delivered at a lower cost on nearly every item of network expenses, which includes lower capital investment costs, lower deployment costs, lower network operating costs, and lower network management costs. Combined costs of an Extreme network have proved to be considerably less than other network solutions. Extreme's focus on low cost and simplicity brings a huge advantage to their customers in a competitive world.
