The enhanced switch chassis is designed
for use of the Catalyst 6500 Series and Supervisor Engines 720-3B
and 720-3BXL. There are 6 different types of “enhanced”
6500 Series switches: the Cisco WS-C6503-E, the Cisco WS-C6504-E,
the Cisco WS-C6506-E, the Cisco WS-C6509-E, the Cisco WS-C6509-V-E,
and the 13-slot powerhouse, the Cisco WS-C6513-E.
The difference in the two enhanced 9 slot routers is for conventional
use of either modular slots that are horizontal on the standard
WS-C6509-E and vertical slots (similar to the Cisco uBR10012
router) for data centers with a preference for vertical deployed
line cards rather than horizontal.

The Cisco Catalyst 6500 series (including the Cisco WS-C6509-E
switch) are Campus LAN (Local Area Network) Core or Distribution
Switches. This means that these switches will be handling the
main responsibility of distribution of the bandwidth in the
Core of the network – just as in the same way the core
of an apple is at its center. Secondary and tertiary switches
branch out and can assist in less important operations that
are designed in your network.
The Cisco WS-C6509-E and the Catalyst 6500 Series switches
are the benchmark or yardstick for novelty in the network industry.
Withstanding the test of time, the WS-C6509-E provides a towering
operational performance, resilient foundation platform perfect
for installations in campus networks, traditional data center
networks, WAN (Wide Area Networks) networks, and Metro class
Ethernet in a wide range of applications. Cisco calls the WS-C6509-E
the base for the “Borderless Network.” What is the
Borderless Network? The Borderless Network is a network that
can securely connect anyplace at anytime. This is achieved by
granular scalability and virtualization allowing for any place
connectivity. Also, the secure identity-based access with TrustSec
allows for connectivity from anywhere to successfully identify
the user and allow for certain accessibilities. Also, the WS-C6509-E
and other enhanced family members can be remotely managed with
high-efficiency.

MAC tables, bridge domains, FIB, and ACL access lists are now
enhanced in the VSS for easy, scalable deployments.

Also, the WS-C6509-E with VSS has the ability to trigger all
accessible bandwidth across several redundant Cisco Catalyst
6500 Switches and eradicates the asymmetric routing. VSS also
supports inter-chassis failover with no down time or interruption.
The failover is provided within the VSS structure providing
EtherChannels with determined sub-secondary recovery from a
power outage or switch failure.
The WS-C6509-E has an extensive security suite that provides
the consolidating of network infrastructure by allowing customers
to resolve security, IT compliance, guest acquisition access,
and limited access difficulties by presenting segmentation ability,
path separation, privacy, consolidated fate sharing, membership
attributes, and spacial address separation technologies.
Both the WS-C6509-E and WS-C6506-E support identify (with 802.1x
suite), tag (with Secure Group Tag [SGT]), encrypt (MACsec),
police (SGACL) with Cisco TrustSec. Data fortification is strengthened
with wire-rate link-layer encryption with hardware MACsec support.
The operational efficiency of the WS-C6509-E supports ROI (return
on investment) protection for IT budgetary purposes with modular
design that eases many different generations of modules in one
switch chassis. Very flexible monitoring of your switches across
your network with SPAN/RSPAN and the capability to virtual connect
a protocol analyzer at your desk to practically any port in
your network with ERSPAN. Application viewing is available through
Flexible Netflow application, Egress Netflow, Sampled NetFlow,
and also CPU Preserving NetFlow Export abilities. Software Image
IOS recovery and console logging through the Connectivity Management
Processor (CMP) or by utilizing the standard Hyper terminal
application assist in viewing and issuing commands. There is
also an onboard packet capture facility with a Mini-Port Analyzer.
The high availability and popularity of the WS-C6509-E switch
provides integrated architectural design strength, whereby also
providing continual access to network applications, data traffic,
and content to end users.
With textbook hardware recovery from failures, the WS-C6509-E
is designed for high availability with support for redundant
dual power supplies, hot-swappable fan trays for redundant failure
recovery, parity (stop bit) protection, dual fabric channels
and dual supervisor engines. Well thought out health check network
ability to deter possible hardware failures and outages utilizing
Cisco’s Generic Online Diagnostics (GOLD).
Also, the WS-C6509-E along with the WS-C6504-E both have service
versatility and flexibility. The enhanced 6500 Series switches
offer comprehensive and complete service module portfolio which
includes: firewalls, load balancers, network analysis modules,
and WiSMs. Built in infrastructure of the WS-C6509-E maintains
virtualization of a service module and operates several services
or applications in a virtual desktop.

MAIN ATTRIBUTES AND ADVANTAGES of the WS-C6509-E
The Cisco WS-C6509-E has an entire array of attributes and
features that make the enhanced 6509 a very resilient switch.
Firstly, the WS-C6509-E utilizes the Virtual Switching System
(VSS) technology, developed on this supervisor engine, which
provides easy-to-use, resilient, and scalable switching for
enterprise core, distribution, data center, and server access
areas of your network. VSS technology also provides a system
operation of up to 1.44 Tbps (Terabits per second) by coalescing
two physical switches and combining them into a single logical
unit, and providing enhanced network convergence of technologies,
load balancing and network manageability.
With the Supervisor Engine 2T, the WS-C6509-E is unlocked for
80 Gbps per slot on all Cisco Catalyst 6500 E Series platforms,
delivering high-density 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, and 40 Gbps network
dynamic connectivity on one, single switch chassis. This setup
proffers 720 Mpps delivered switching operation, making the
foundation for the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Virtual Switching System
4T.
Now, with the Virtual Switching Supervisor Engine 720-10G,
the supervisor engine is able to be used in standalone mode
to deliver up to 48 Mpps of centralized and 450 Mpps of distributed
switching operation, making the base for the Cisco Catalyst
6500 Virtual Switching System 1440.
With the newer Cisco IOS Software on the WS-C6509-E switches,
this IOS diminishes both scheduled and unscheduled downtime
while accelerating performance efficiency. Failures within modular
subsystems are localized from all other applications and processes,
and can be rebooted without losing state (stateful process restarts).
Interestingly, modular IOS image BIN files will continue to
be supported in IOS release 12.2(33)SXI, but software IOS upgrades
will no longer be provided starting with IOS release 12.2(33)SXI3.
The Cisco WS-C6509-E contains the Cisco IOS Embedded Event
Manager (EEM), which automates determined administrative jobs
and network responses to unexpected events to further optimize
performance efficiency.
The maximum PoE (Power over Ethernet) scalability supports
up to 500 plus Class 3 devices and speeds up deployment of PoE-enabled
devices such as IP (Internet Protocol) telephones and wireless
access points, such as Apple Airport Extreme devices. The Cisco
Intelligent Power Management divides the optimum amount of power
per device that is needed.
Also, the WS-C6509-E has support for Multichassis etherChannel
(MEC) and delivers redundancy for physical network links and
switches and can be installed using VSS technology on each of
the Cisco Catalyst 6500 E Series switches.
For optional scalability, the WS-C6509-E allows various integrated
service modules that permit multigigabit throughput of services
such as firewall services, intrusion detection services, anomaly
detection services, content switching services (load balancing),
network analysis services, wireless integration services, voice
gateway services, and the list goes on and on.

The WS-C6509-E has flexible configuration options including
modular 3-slot, 4-slot, 6-slot, 9-slot, and 13-slot chassis.
With the 13-slot chassis, maximum capacity can reach 80 GB per
slot ability.
