Cisco WS-SUP720-3B smallProduct Description:

Cisco Catalyst 6500, 7600 Series - Supervisor Engine 720 Fabric MSFC3 PFC3B. The WS-SUP720-3B supports 512MB of DRAM for the route processor and 512 MB for the switch processor, and upgradeable to 1GB. It comes with two Gigabit Ethernet Uplink Ports, one Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP), one selectable SFP or 10/100/100 RJ-4, and one RS-232 Console Port.
The Cisco 6500 Series Supervisor Engine 720 WS-SUP720-3B has the traditional IP forwarding, Layer 2 and Layer 3 Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) VPNs, Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS) with quality of service (QoS) and security features.

The Cisco Catalyst 6500/Cisco 7600 Series Supervisor Engine 720 is a group of Supervisor Engine(s) designed to deliver buildable operation and impressive group of IP (Internet Protocol) traits in equipment. The Cisco WS-SUP720-3B’s hardware-based enhanced features enables applications such as traditional IP forwarding, Layer 2 and Layer 3 Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) VPNs, Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS) with quality of service (QoS) and security benefits. The Supervisor engine 720 integrates a high operation 720 Gbps crossbar switch fabric with a forwarding engine in a single module, distributing 40 Gbps of switching capacity per slot (enabling 4-port 10GE and 48-port 10/100/1000 density line cards). With hardware-enabled forwarding for IPv4, IPv6 and MPLS, the system operation is capable of 400 Mpps for IPv4, 200 Mpps for IPv6 traffic, with abilities and 1024 VRFs each populated with up to 700 routes/VRF for MPLS.
The Cisco Supervisor Engine 720 offers a rich set of security features. System security is compressed with support for features such as Port Security, CPU rate limiting, Multi-Path uRPF and a long list 802.1x extension. Broad feature support such as QoS mechanisms, hardware-based generic-routing-encapsulation (GRE) tunneling, and access control lists (ACLs) allow customers to build scalable, impressive campus networks, metropolitan (metro) aggregation, and various WAN edge networks.
With improved security, rich QoS and buildable operation for Gigabit and 10gigabit. The Cisco WS-SUP720-3B is perfect for enterprise core, distribution, and datacenters.

Cisco WS-SUP720-3B Supervisor Engine

The Cisco WS-SUP720-3B is a Catalyst 6500 Series / Cisco 7600 Supervisor Engine 720 Fabric MSFC3 PFC3B that is designed to work in Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches and Cisco 7600 hybrid router/switches. This supervisor engine WS-SUP720-3B has integrated switching fabric proficient of 720 Gbps (Gigabits per second). It is optimized in all high bandwidth installations – core deployments, distribution deployments, aggregation deployments, and data center access.

Optimized for towering bandwidth standards of enterprise core, distribution and data centers, the WS-SUP720-3B delivers up to 400 Mpps (Million packets per second) of switching operation. The throughput of the SUP720 is enhanced with support for line cards that contain Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF720) and distributed Cisco Express Forwarding (dCEF720), IPv6 and MPLS supported in the hardware with Layer 3 routing protocols.
The Supervisor Engine 720 builds on the proven Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) architecture, by backing up centralized forwarding (CEF) and distributed forwarding (dCEF). The alternatives of PFC3 distinguish the several Supervisor 720 groups of engines. The PFC3A, PFC3B, and PFC3BXL link to WS-SUP720, WS-SUP720-3B and WS-SUP720-3BXL. Cisco Catalyst OS and Cisco IOS support the Supervisor Engine 720 family.

The Cisco WS-SUP720-3B offers designable operations, intelligence, and impressive features to address the needs of the most demanding service provider and enterprise deployment requirements for designing modular, resilient, and secure layer 2 or layer 3 results by:
• Bringing buildable forwarding performance: up to 400 Mpps1 IPv4 and 200 Mpps IPv6 with dCEF
• Multi Protocol Label Switching support (MPLS) in hardware: supporting the use of VPNs and layer 2 tunneling while enhancing traffic engineering for QoS
• Distributing up to 40 Gbps per slot of switching capability; 720 Gbps redundant bandwidth
• Providing support for new integrated operations gigabit and 10Gigabit interfaces
• Guarding customer's investment, backing all three generations of Catalyst 6500 series interfaces, service module configurations, and WAN interfaces
• Enabling an increase in chassis interface port resilience and services module configurations.
The Cisco WS-SUP720-3B’s PFC3 and MSFC3 offer the various features:
MSFC3
The MSFC3 is an vital part of the Supervisor Engine 720, providing great performance, multilayer switching and routing intellect. Equipped with an enriched processor, the MSFC runs layer 2 protocols on one CPU and layer 3 protocols on the second CPU. These contain routing protocol support, layer 2 protocols (for example Spanning Tree Protocol and VLAN Trunking Protocol), and security services.
The MSFC designs the Cisco Express Forwarding information Base (FIB) table in software and then downloads this table to the hardware Application-specific-integrated circuits (ASICs) on the PFC3 and Distributed forwarding engine (if present) that create the forwarding decisions for IP unicast and multicast traffic.
PFC3
The Supervisor Engine WS-SUP720-3B’s PFC3 is equipped with an enhanced ASIC complex supporting an array of hardware-based attributes. The PFC3 supports routing and bridging, QoS, and multicast packet replication, and processes security policies such as access control lists (ACLs).
The Supervisor engine 720 has a field-upgradeable Policy Feature Card3. The PFC3 is equipped with a high performance ASIC complex supporting a range of hardware based features. The PFC3 backs up IPv4, IPv6 routing and bridging functionality, quality of service (QoS) and multicast forwarded and ACL-based policies.
