ATM port adapters provide ports for connection to network services. You can install up to two port adapter cards in a carrier module in slot 0, slot 1, slot 3, or slot 4 of an ATM switch chassis. ATM port adapters share the following common features: ATM Port Addresses, Port Adapter Clocking Options, and Traffic Pacing.

ATM is a switching technology that has the capability to set up virtual circuits before transmission starts. ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) is a data-link network technology that operates at Layer 2 of the OSI model and is designed to run over fiber-optic cable operating at SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) specifications. Most ATM backbone LANs run OC-3 or OC-12. Most intercity Internet trunks are OC-12 running ATM, with OC-48 and higher taking over the heavier trunks.
