Used Cisco LAN Switching Overview

A LAN switch provides much higher port density at a lower cost than traditional bridges. This is why LAN switches can accommodate network designs featuring fewer users per segment, thereby increasing the average available bandwidth per user.

Modular Switching

The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series Switches provide Layer 2-4 services for secure unified communications and simplify operations in enterprise LAN access. They are built for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and branch offices. The 4500 Series Switches support Extensive Power over Ethernet (PoE), 15.4W IEEE 802.3af, 20W for 802-1 1n access points, and up to 30W of PoE per port for future high-power devices IPv6 hardware. they also have up to 388 ports of Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet and up to thirty-four 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports, and Layer 2-4 switching speeds of 320 Gbps and 250 Mpps.

The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches supports 300 access points per module for a total of 1500 access points. These multi-gigabit service modules have integrated security, network management features, and Layer 4-7 switching capabilities. They have the highest port density for 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 1 Gigabit Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports. The Cisco 6500 Series Switches scale up to 720 Gbps of switching capacity with packet throughput scalable to 450 Mpps for IPv$ (>200 Mpps for IPv6) in standalone mode, and scales up to 144 Tbps and 840 Mpps when using Cisco Catalyst 6500 virtual Switching System technology.

Fixed Configuration

The Cisco Catalyst Express 500 Series Switches and the Cisco Catalyst Express 520 Series Switches are standalone Layer 2 switches. They are built for Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and have GUI-based management and configuration features. These Express Switches go up to 24 ports of Gigabit Ethernet, and up to 24 10/100 ports with optional Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) or 12 10/100/1000 ports.

The Cisco Catalyst 2950 Series Switches consists of Layers 2-, 3-, and 4-based services. They have wire-speed performance, Quality of Service (QoS), security, STP enhancements, and gigabit-interface-converter (GBIC)-based uplink ports for media flexibility.

The Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series Switches are LAN based switches with Layers 2+ services for enhanced security, Quality of Service (QoS), and 8-, 24-, and 48-port configurations with Fast Ethernet, Power over Ethernet (PoE), and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity.

The Cisco Catalyst 3560 Series Switches work on Layers 2-4 and come with dynamic IP routing and IPv6. They are built for Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and go up to 48 10/100/1000 ports, and 4 Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) ports.

The Cisco Catalyst 3560-E Series Switches work on Layers 2-4 and come with dynamic IP routing and IPv6. They are built for Gigabit Ethernet and 10-Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. Other features include: field-replaceable and upgradeable power supplies and fan; up to 48 10/100/1000 ports plus 2 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports per switch, Cisco TwinGig converter Module for migrating uplinks from Gigabit Ethernet to 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

The Cisco Catalyst 3750 Series Switches work on Layers 2-4 (and 32-Gbps interconnect) and come with dynamic IP routing and IPv6. They are stackable, fixed-configuration switches and support Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. The integrated wireless LAN (WLAN) controllers support 25 or 50 access points per card and up to 4 cards for a total of 200 access points. They go up to 48 10/100/1000 ports and 4 SFP ports per switch.

The Cisco Catalyst 3750-E Series Switches work on Layers 2-4 (and 64-Gbps interconnect) and come with dynamic IP routing and IPv6. They are stackable, fixed-configuration switches and support Gigabit Ethernet and 10-Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. They go up to 48 10/100/1000 ports and 2 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports per switch.

The Cisco Catalyst 4948 Series Switches work on Layers 2-4 and come with dynamic IP routing and IPv6. They go up to 48 10/100/1000 ports with 4 Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) ports or 48 10/100/1000 ports with 2 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports. The dual AC and DC power supplies and fan trays are hot-swappable.

The Cisco Catalyst 4900M Series Switches are top-of-rack optimized switches with built-in 2 half module slots. They work on Layer 2-4 and come with dynamic IP routing and IPv6. They go up to 40 10/100/1000 ports, up to 24 ports of 10 GbE, and up to 32 GbE SFP ports (via Twingig converter with 8-port 10 GbE modules). The dual AC and DC power supplies and fan trays are hot-swappable.
