Cisco Storage Media Encryption (SME)
protects data at rest on heterogeneous tape drives and
Velocity Template Languages (VTLs) in a
storage-area-network (SAN) environment using secure
IEEE-standard Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)
algorithms. It is supported natively on the Cisco MDS
9000 18/4-Port Multiservice Module, and the Cisco MDS
9222i Multiservice Modular Switch. Cisco SME
capabilities are provided as a fabric service so that
traffic between any host and storage device on the
fabric can use the Cisco SME services.
