Part # Cisco ASR 9006

Cisco ASR 9006 smallProduct Description: The Cisco ASR 9000 Series, and specifically the Cisco ASR 9006, is an innovative new paradigm in the world of carrier ethernet transport with exceptional scalability, carrier-class reliability, environmentally conscious design, unbelievable flexibility, and an alluring new price-to-performance benchmark.

There are two form factors that the Cisco ASR 9000 Series are available in: The Cisco ASR 9010 Router and the Cisco ASR 9006 Router. Cisco ASR 9000 Routers are designed to prove true-carrier class reliability using the Cisco IOS (Internetworking Operating Software) XR operating system, full system redundancy, and an inclusive complement of network resiliency schemes.

The Cisco ASR 9000 Series is designed to enhance the operational and installation aspects of service-delivery networks, and to simplify them. The Cisco ASR 9000n Series also offers service and application-level intelligence, primarily focused on optimized video delivery and mobile aggregation.

Key Benefits of ASR 9006

Cisco IOS XR modular operating system – The Cisco ASR 9000 Series leverages the Cisco IOS XR operating system made famous by the extremely successful Cisco CRS Carrier Routing System platform in core deployments. The Cisco IOS XR operating system is intended for distribution systems such as the Cisco ASR 9000 Series, and utilizes a micro-kernel architecture to reach true modularity. This modularity provides continuous operations during software image upgrades or modular changes, without affecting usual platform operations.

Fully distributed system – The Cisco ASR 9000 Series operating system is a fully distributed system, meaning, all packet-forwarding decisions and actions take place on the individual line cards. These high-density ethernet line cards come equipped with a specialized network processor that delivers a flexible programming infrastructure with high-density hierarchical quality-of-service (H-QoS) services, security, and integrated synchronous ethernet. The distributed nature of the Cisco ASR 9000 Series advances resiliency by adding an innovative dimension in scale for benefits such as bidirectional forwarding detection (BFD) and Ethernet operations, administrations, and maintenance (E-OAM).

Operationally, proficient and redundant hardware – The Cisco ARS 9000 Series delivers an infrastructure where all common components, route switch processors (RSPs), switching fabrics, fans, and power supplies, are all entirely redundant for ease of swapping units that are defective, or for product or module upgrades. The platform is designed that power is used on an as-needed basis depending on system requirements. Power has been modularized for a real pay-as-you-grow approach, decreasing capital expenditures (CapEx) and providing an operationally efficient deployment.

The Cisco ASR 9000 also delivers a space-optimized small-platform option that uses the ASR 9000 series’ common components and retains a central office deployment-ready ability using a patent-pending side-to-back airflow design.

Environmentally aware design – In the world today, there is a rising amount of awareness of the human impact on the environment and the resultant economic implications, The Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers bring a fresh innovative conscious approach to product growth. Providing optimum thermal design to the architecture of the power infrastructure, from the location of line card components to the pitch of each slot, every design feature had one goal – to reduce environmental impact by lowered power consumption and reduced cooling requirements. The product packing process was also evaluated to diminish the use of packing material to reduce waste at customer locations. The Cisco ASR 9000 Series is an example of the continual Cisco commitment to resourceful and future-friendly product design.

Specifications for the Cisco ASR 9006

The weight for the Cisco ASR9006 is 110 lbs. (50 kg) in an empty, non-populated chassis. If the chassis is fully loaded with power supplies, modules, etc., then the resultant weight is 230 lbs. (106.8 kg).  The height of the ASR9006 comes to 1.75 inches, equating to 444.5 millimeters, with its width measuring at 1.75 inches also, and again 444.5 mm. The depth of the unit is 31.45 inches with doors (798.8 mm), and without the doors measuring at 28.65 inches (727.2 mm).

Facing the unit, the Cisco ASR9006 contains horizontal oriented slots for quick and easy swapping of network modules. Two power supplies come in 2 slots for power redundancy. Four line card slots are on the face of the unit with the combined power of two switch processors. Dual fan trays cool the unit, and one PEM, which can be either AC (Alternating Current) or DC (Direct Current). The ASR9006 has one fan filter and comes with 19 inch rack mounts.
The airflow of the Cisco ASR 9006 is from side to back, not interfering with any power consumption on the ports on the faceplate. With speeds up to 3.2 Terabytes per second in chassis switching, the Cisco ASR9006 commands a high-performance, high-speed switch capacity.

Also, in a dual RSP processor redundancy configuration, options are open for active blocking and active non-blocking operations – as to not interrupt throughput traffic. Also innovative is the built-in service-intelligence and traffic-prioritization ability – allowing for more important applications to receive priority than less important functional applications.

Varying speeds for the fans allows network administrators to cool the unit to perform within the standard thermal conditions for optimal installation and work performance. The ASR 9000 Series is modular, allowing for failure to occur at the module level, still keeping the unit dynamic and active, while a swap of the defective unit won’t interfere with other operations occurring at the same time.

In summary, for upcoming and future expandability of your network, the ASR9006 comes with up to 3 power modules (either AC or DC), to meet your companies expanding power and bandwidth needs – basically, designed to grow with your network. There are 3 types of power modules available: the 3 Kilowatt AC Power Module, the 2.1 Kilowatt Power Module, and the 1.5 Kilowatt DC Power Module.
