What Does Your Data Center or Telecom Room Look Like?

Written: September 11, 2007

Who does the daily or weekly maintenance to your Data Center or Telecom Room? If it is in a secured room, janitors and most employees don't have access. Then what? Who is in charge of cleaning this type of space? Should access be given to the janitor crew?

At a large corporation that I previously worked at, the Telecom Rooms were filthy catch-alls riddled with bugs and rodents. But, on the other hand, the average employee and janitorial staff did not have access to the Telecom Rooms either. What a dilemma! What is the solution?

Granted, Data Centers and Telecom Rooms should be restricted areas for obvious reasons. So, who does this leave to clean these rooms? This leaves the cleaning to the IT professionals or trained employees in charge of security. To extend the life expectancy of expensive network equipment, regular maintenance must be done.

Here are a few tips to remember when cleaning Data Centers and Telecom Rooms:

  • Vacuuming is better than sweeping, but it is not always plausible. When sweeping the floor, minimize the amount of dust flurrying up in the air.
  • When mopping the floor, be careful to not splash soapy or chemical water onto equipment.
  • Avoid spraying the equipment and racks as you clean and use antistatic microfiber towels.  Use EnvironTek or other approved cleaning chemicals.
  • Keep the HVAC filters clean.
  • Instead of using insecticide sprays, use traps and tacky strips.
  • Don't place batteries over or on equipment.
Summary

Routine maintenance needs to be done by the IT professionals or trained personnel. Network equipment is expensive and it merits being treated as a valued business asset.
